If the first medicine disappoints, that is information about the first medicine. Plenty of people who get nothing from one class do well on another.
Methylphenidate and amphetamine are not the same drug at different strengths. They work by partly different routes, so a poor result on one says surprisingly little about the other. Saying this at the very start helps: it is a sequence rather than a single verdict. People who expect two or three attempts tend to stay in treatment, and people who expected one often walk away after it.

What the research says
A review of adult pharmacotherapy reports that stimulant effect sizes approach those seen in school-age children once doses are adequate, with atomoxetine and bupropion described as second-line options. Adequate dosing is carrying a lot of weight in that sentence, and it is part of why a first attempt can look like failure when it was really an underdose. Read it as support for persisting sensibly through a sequence rather than as a promise about any one person.

Near this one
Some students do well on a long acting dose through the day plus a small short acting one in the evening for studying. Which short acting drug is chosen matters, because some are gentler on sleep than others.
An immediate release dose gives you the whole thing at once: quick to start, strong at the top, gone within a few hours. If that is what you take, put the demanding things inside the hours it actually covers.
If a small child cannot swallow tablets, that is a solvable problem rather than a reason to give up on treatment. One methylphenidate preparation comes as a skin patch.
