Medication belongs in ordinary treatment here rather than at the end of the queue. Most people with a clear diagnosis will use it at some point.

Strategies and accommodations do real work while somebody is watching, and they fall away in the settings where nobody is. That is most of adult life. Framing medication as what you turn to once everything else has failed buys years of trying by hand, and it teaches the person that needing it counts as a defeat. It is treatment for a condition, offered early because early is when it does most good.

Before you use this

This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'God wishes to lighten your burden' (Quran 4:28), said of people described in the same breath as created weak. Accepting something that lightens a burden fits that rather than working against it.

يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمۡۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ ضَعِيفࣰ ا

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak

What the research says

A review of ADHD in children and young people puts prevalence at around one in twenty worldwide, while rates of diagnosis and treatment vary enormously between countries and services. So whether somebody gets treated has depended heavily on where they live rather than on how much they needed it. That is a finding about services rather than a count of how many people would benefit.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Support that depends on somebody else being present disappears exactly where life gets harder.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
