Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Medication and how it works
If the patch brings a rash, it is usually a reaction to the medicine passing through the skin rather than to the sticky backing. Worth knowing, because switching brand or trying a kinder tape will not fix it.
Skin has its own way of reacting to something held against it for hours at a time, and that reaction stays local. Saying this early saves a family a round of pointless swapping, and it keeps the door open to taking the same medicine by mouth. A rash still gets looked at properly rather than assumed about.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'ask those who have knowledge if you do not know' (Quran 16:43). A pharmacist can tell you in a minute what a fortnight of guessing will not.
[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know

What the research says
This level of detail sits near the edge of what has been settled. A clinical review of twenty years of ADHD research sets out what the field has established about treatment and what it has not, and fine grained questions about individual side effects sit largely in the second group. Take it, then, as accumulated clinical experience rather than as a firm trial result.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The reaction belongs to the skin's contact with the drug, so a different patch brings the same problem with it.
When not to
A rash with swelling, breathlessness or a spreading reaction is urgent and needs same day medical help.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
When a dose that was working seems to stop working in a growing child, check height and weight before you reach for the word tolerance. These medicines are dosed by body weight, and a child can simply have outgrown the dose.
When a medicine seems to be underperforming, look at what else is in the room before reaching for a higher dose. Anxiety, low mood and a wrecked sleep pattern can each blunt a good response or imitate a poor one.
There is a second way the body clears these messages, which breaks them down rather than filing them away for reuse. A handful of older medicines work by blocking that breaking down.
