Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Use your strengths
Look for something genuinely hard that sits on top of something you are already good at. Too easy and your attention wanders off. Too far beyond you and it just becomes another thing you failed at.
The narrow band in between is where you stay engaged without noticing you are trying. It is usually a bit further up than feels comfortable when you pick it: the class one level above, the piece of work you are not certain you can pull off, the instrument you can already hold. If a task has stopped holding you, the useful question is not how to make yourself concentrate. It is whether the thing has gone slack and needs raising.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Put me in charge of the nation's storehouses: I shall manage them prudently and carefully (Quran 12:55). Joseph asks for the demanding job that matches what he can do, and there is nothing immodest in knowing where you are useful.
قَالَ ٱجۡعَلۡنِي عَلَىٰ خَزَآئِنِ ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمࣱ
Joseph said, ‘Put me in charge of the nation’s storehouses: I shall manage them prudently and carefully.’

What the research says
A meta-analysis across 114 randomised trials with 20,853 participants found that strength based interventions improved wellbeing, and went further by testing whether the strengths themselves were what carried the improvement. So building on something you already have has trial evidence behind it, across a lot of people. Those trials were about wellbeing in general rather than about ADHD or about calibrating difficulty, so the pitching of the challenge is reasoning rather than a tested finding.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Attention holds when the demand sits just above what you can already do.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
A relationship with no friction in it can leave an ADHD partner restless rather than content. A bit of heat is not the same as a bad marriage. What matters is what happens afterwards.
When the right piece of work finally has you, you are entirely there. Hours go, nothing intrudes, and the difficulty that flattens you elsewhere is nowhere in the room.
Some of the low, grey stretches are not depression. They are what happens when there has been nothing on the go for a while, and the colour comes back when a project starts.
