A medicine can give you back some energy. It cannot turn a bad situation into a good one, and it helps to be clear which of the two you are hoping for.

If home has been miserable for two years, feeling steadier may just mean you notice the misery more sharply. People often read that as the medicine failing, when what happened is that the medicine did its part and the problem is still sitting there. Say the situation out loud, to yourself or to whoever is treating you, so that it does not get quietly filed under symptoms.

Before you use this

This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful' (Quran 21:83). Job says the plain thing about his own situation instead of pretending the trouble is somewhere else.

Remember Job, when he cried to his Lord, ‘Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’

What the research says

The long follow up of the multimodal treatment study is sobering here. Children assigned to different treatments differed at first, but by adulthood that early advantage had faded and outcomes were worse than in comparison peers whichever arm they had been in. That study is about ADHD rather than antidepressants, so take the general shape of it rather than the specifics. Treatment moves symptoms, and the rest of a life keeps happening around it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Relief from symptoms and a change in circumstances are separate things, and the first does not deliver the second.

When not to

If the situation includes anyone being hurt or frightened at home, that needs its own help rather than a change of dose.
