The blockade is partial. Serotonin is not trapped in there forever: enzymes still break it down and the transporters that are not blocked carry on working.
That matters for accuracy and it matters for reassurance, because people do picture something flooding and stuck. It also explains why serotonin syndrome does not arise out of one ordinary prescription taken as directed. It generally takes a second serotonergic agent stacked on top before the system is pushed that far.

A four arm randomised online trial found that brief interventions could shift reward sensitivity, one of the processes thought to keep depression going, though the effects were modest. That study looked at a psychological process, not at a drug's action. The general shape is the same for both: these treatments nudge a system that is still running itself, which is also why nothing changes overnight.
