The newer thinking about depression is less about topping up a missing chemical and more about connections that have thinned out being rebuilt. Recovery looks more like regrowth than refilling.
Long stretches of depression seem to leave parts of the brain less richly connected, and some treatments appear to work by helping those links form again. It is a hopeful picture and a patient one. Regrowth needs repetition and time, which is why the small things you keep doing count for more than any single good day.
Qur’an and Sunnah
You see the earth lying desolate, but when We send water down on to it, it stirs and grows (Quran 41:39). The earth is not replaced, it is revived, which is a fair picture of what recovery is doing.
Another of His signs is this: you see the earth lying desolate, but when We send water down on to it, it stirs and grows. He who gives it life will certainly give life to the dead. He has power over everything

What the research says
Repeated practice does seem to change how a person recovers. In a study combining an experiment with survey data, people who exercised regularly bounced back from a laboratory stressor with less rumination, and a single bout of exercise also improved recovery. That points to a plausible mechanism linking activity to how you feel, though it is a small piece of evidence rather than a settled account.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Connections that have thinned out are rebuilt by repetition rather than restored in one go.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.

Coming off an antidepressant is a piece of work in itself. Plan it slowly with the prescriber rather than stopping on the day you feel well.
Before deciding a medicine did not work, check that it was taken at a dose and for a length of time that could have worked.
Never come off an antidepressant on your own. The taper belongs to the prescriber, and for some drugs it needs to be slower and longer than people expect.
