Taking the phone away leaves a hole the exact size of the phone. Something has to go into it, or the evening just becomes an argument you both lose.

Part of why scrolling is so hard to drop is that the reward arrives at unpredictable intervals, which is the pattern that keeps behaviour alive longest after the rewards thin out. Willpower is the wrong tool for that. What tends to work better is deciding in advance what the hand reaches for instead: the kettle, a walk, a game with someone in the room, the prayer you were going to leave until late anyway. Replacement is a smaller ask than deprivation and it survives a bad evening better.

Qur’an and Sunnah

It is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace (Quran 13:28). Something is being reached for when the hand reaches for the phone, and the verse names what would actually meet it.

What the research says

A systematic review and meta-analysis has quantified how much more steeply people with internet addiction discount delayed rewards than people without, meaning a small reward now outweighs a larger one later by a wider margin. These are group comparisons rather than tests of any intervention, and the pattern could run in either direction. It supports the general point that a distant benefit is a weak competitor here, so whatever you put in the gap had better pay off soon.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

An unpredictable reward keeps a habit alive long after you decided to stop, so taking it away without offering anything in its place leaves the pull exactly where it was.
