The planning part of the brain is the last to finish growing, and it keeps developing well into the twenties. Eighteen is a legal age rather than a developmental one.

This is worth saying plainly in a family where someone is being asked why they cannot just be responsible now. Nobody expects a fourteen year old to hold a mortgage in their head, and the same patience applies a good deal further up than most of us assume. It does not take anyone's responsibility away. It changes the question from what is wrong with you into what still needs holding, and for how long.

Qur’an and Sunnah

God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear (Quran 2:286). Expectations that run ahead of what a person can actually carry are worth questioning, not enforcing harder.

God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’

What the research says

A systematic review covering fifteen years of research on adolescents with ADHD coded the studies against standard criteria and calculated effect sizes for both medication and behaviour therapy. It is about treatment during the teenage years rather than about how the brain matures, so the developmental timeline above comes from elsewhere and is not what this review shows. What it does support is that this age group has been studied on its own terms and needs its own answers.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

The part of the brain that plans, waits and holds several things at once is still being built, so asking for the finished version early is asking for something not yet there.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
