If a year out is coming, call it a bridge rather than a gap. A gap is a hole in a record. A bridge is going somewhere.

That word will be repeated at every family gathering for twelve months, so it is worth choosing carefully. A bridge year has a direction and an end, even when the far side is still blurry, and it invites the question of what is being crossed towards. Try writing one sentence together about what this year is for. It does not have to sound impressive to anyone else, it only has to be true.

Qur’an and Sunnah

You will progress from stage to stage (Quran 84:19). A life is described as moving through stages, which is a better description of a bridge year than of a hole in a record.

What the research says

A cognitive behavioural account of adult ADHD argues that accumulated failure, criticism and underachievement sit on top of the attention difficulties themselves and shape what any therapy has to deal with. It is an argument from clinical experience rather than a trial, so it does not show that changing one word changes an outcome. It does explain why a year labelled as a gap lands so heavily on someone already convinced they are behind.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

The name a family gives a year quietly decides whether it counts as time lost or time spent.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
