The next step has to be theirs. A job that looks like nothing to you might be the first thing in two years they chose without being pushed, and that is exactly why it holds.
Parents tend to want the step that recovers the lost ground. The young person needs the step they can actually take on Monday. Shifts in a shop, one evening class, walking a neighbour's dog. Say out loud that you are protecting the pace, because urgency from people who love you is still urgency and it is felt. Something chosen tends to keep going under its own steam, while something pushed usually needs pushing again the following week.

Put me in charge of the nation's storehouses: I shall manage them prudently and carefully (Quran 12:55). Joseph asks for the responsibility himself, and the asking is part of what makes him equal to it.

What the research says
A randomised trial with 257 employees compared making a plan alone, having a partner support you, and both together, following whether physical activity kept going across six months. It is a different behaviour and a different group of people, so it settles nothing about young adults finding their feet. It is worth citing because it takes seriously the question underneath this tip: what does the other person add, and what has to remain the person's own.

Before anything else, check the child actually knows what the homework is. Most homework goes missing at that first step, not at the effort step.
A behaviour agreement needs six things in it: the goal, exactly what the child does, what they earn, what happens if they do not, signatures from everyone, and an adult who sticks to it.
If most of the difficulty is happening at home, most of the work needs to happen with the household in the room. Otherwise the hour of good conversation gets quietly undone by Tuesday.
