When somebody looks like they have stopped caring, it is often that they have stopped expecting it to go well. Giving up on yourself tends to come after a long run of trying and being told it was not enough.

That changes what helps. Another plan, another chart, another talk about wasted potential all land on the wrong problem. What shifts things is a first task small enough that success is close to certain, then another, until the expectation of failing has something to argue with. For a parent or a partner it also means keeping encouragement believable rather than big.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Whenever you forget, remember your Lord and say, May my Lord guide me closer to what is right (Quran 18:24). The way back after a lapse is a turn, not a punishment.

without adding, ‘God willing,’ and, whenever you forget, remember your Lord and say, ‘May my Lord guide me closer to what is right.’

What the research says

A meta-analysis drawing on 691 correlations found that low belief in your own ability to do a task, along with how unpleasant the task is and how far off the deadline sits, are among the strongest predictors of putting it off. Laziness and poor values were not. It is correlational, so it shows what travels together rather than proving what causes what.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

People try when they believe trying might work.

When not to

If the hopelessness has settled in and covers most of life rather than one task, that is worth taking to a doctor or therapist rather than handling with a list.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
