There is a corner of the week that is neither urgent nor important, and it is where avoiding lives. The real cost is rarely the lost hours. It is what you end up saying to yourself afterwards.

Learn the difference between resting and avoiding, because from outside they look identical and they feel nothing alike. Rest leaves you lighter. Avoidance leaves a quiet commentary running underneath. The way out is not a stricter ban, which never lasts, but a limit you set yourself and a plan for what comes next: twenty minutes of this, then the thing I am dodging, in its smallest possible version.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Eat and drink but do not be extravagant (Quran 7:31). The limit is set inside the permission, which is a kinder and more workable rule than forbidding the whole thing.

Children of Adam, dress well whenever you are at worship, and eat and drink [as We have permitted] but do not be extravagant: God does not like extravagant people

What the research says

A cognitive behavioural account of adult ADHD argues that accumulated failure, criticism and underachievement sit on top of the attention difficulties themselves and shape what treatment has to address. It is a clinical argument rather than a trial. Its bearing here is that the self talk after an avoided afternoon is not a side issue but part of the thing being treated, and worth naming out loud.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Avoiding brings relief first and a worse feeling second, which is why it keeps getting chosen and keeps costing.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
