Five minutesUnder stressCBTFocus, starting, and ADHD

When your child comes to you in a spin, the kind thing is to stay warm and steady rather than to promise that it will be fine. Reassurance settles the next ten minutes and feeds the asking.

It sounds cold and it is not. What your steadiness says is two things at once: this feeling is real, and I think you can carry it. Keep it short and plain. That sounds horrible, I am here. Then stay, and resist filling the silence with fixes. Answering the same question for the fourth time is usually where the line sits.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'seek help through steadfastness and prayer, for God is with the steadfast' (Quran 2:153). Steadiness is what is being asked for here, more than answers are.

You who believe, seek help through steadfastness and prayer, for God is with the steadfast

What the research says

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 59 longitudinal studies looked at how far parenting and the family environment relate to children developing ADHD. What it found were associations across time and not proof that parents cause it, which is worth saying plainly, because none of this makes you the problem. It does mean the way a home answers distress is worth some thought.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Reassurance ends the discomfort immediately, which teaches everybody to come back for more of it.

When not to

If the distress is severe or there is any risk of harm, comfort first and get help; this is guidance for everyday anxiety, not for a crisis.
