When someone has gone flat, the question is not what they ought to be doing. It is what still has any life in it for them, however small or unimpressive, and then how to get more of that.

Activities handed out from the outside do not lift much. Someone who brightens talking about their car, or a cousin, or a game has just given you the material. Two other things matter here. Saying plainly that feeling different is not a fault, and finding out what the family understands about neurodiversity, since that often decides whether home is a place of support or of shame.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Did We not relieve your heart for you' (Quran 94:1) and 'remove the burden' (Quran 94:2). Relief is described as arriving rather than manufactured, which is a gentler standard than trying to cheer up.

What the research says

In the MTA cohort, childhood clinical, demographic and family factors were used to predict how adults with and without childhood ADHD were functioning later on. It supports asking about family and culture rather than only about symptoms. Prediction across a large cohort is not the same as knowing what will happen to the person in front of you.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Doing more of something only lifts you when the something genuinely appeals to you.

When not to

If the flatness comes with hopelessness or with thoughts of not being here, that needs proper assessment and not an activity.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
