Think of your sense of the future as how far out to sea you can spot a ship. How far depends on your eyesight, and also on how big and bright the ship is and what the weather is doing.
That last part is the useful bit. The same person sees a wedding six months off perfectly clearly and misses a form due on Tuesday completely, because one is enormous and vivid and the other is small and grey. So when something matters and is dull, the job is to make it bigger and brighter: on the wall, in a colour, mentioned to somebody else, attached to something already visible in your week.
Qur’an and Sunnah
We have determined phases for the moon until finally it becomes like an old date-stalk (Quran 36:39). Time is given visible stages you can count, which is what a wall calendar does for a deadline.

What the research says
A review of the cognitive and neural work on procrastination picks out three features of a task that most drive delay: how unpleasant it is, how large the future payoff is, and how far away that payoff sits. Those are the same modulators the ship image describes. It is a narrative review drawing experimental findings together rather than a test of any technique, so the practical steps above are inference from it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Whether something registers depends on its size and vividness as much as on how far off it is.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
The pattern usually ends the same way. Nothing feels urgent, then the deadline lands all at once, and the child panics and produces something poor or nothing at all.
A clock with hands shows you how much is left. A number only tells you where you are, which is why the hour can vanish while you keep checking it.
Time speeds up inside something absorbing and crawls inside something dull, and for many people with ADHD that swing is much wider. Which means your sense of time is least reliable exactly where you need it most.
