Keep a count of it. Everyone talks themselves out of things, and 'I always pull it off at the last minute' is a belief living off the handful of times it was true.
Nothing clever is needed. A tick on the calendar for days that went to plan, a note of the times you started late and how that actually turned out. Because the last minute rescue does work occasionally, the memory of it stays bright while all the rest fades. A written record is duller than memory and a good deal fairer.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'Whatever good you store up for yourselves, you will find it with God: He sees everything you do' (Quran 2:110). Nothing goes unrecorded, and your own record is only there to help you see straight.

What the research says
A review of how episodic foresight develops in children takes care to separate it from planning, from delay of gratification and from remembering to do things later, treating these as related but distinct. That matters here because 'I'll wing it' quietly bundles them all together. It is a developmental review rather than evidence about self tracking, so take the distinction and not much more.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A rare success, vividly remembered, feels far more common than it is, and only a count corrects that.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Usually it is not that you did not know better. The obvious option had already taken hold before anything you know got a chance to speak.
Without that gap the choice is made before it is a choice: one marshmallow now instead of two in ten minutes. It shows up in money, in work, in what gets said to people.
Before you hand it over, read the original request again. Not your memory of it. The actual words.
