When you have stopped believing you can change anything, the reflex is to avoid and to scroll. What breaks that is not encouragement, it is one small thing actually finished.
Pick something small enough to be sure of: one drawer, one email, one form. The point is not the drawer. The point is a fresh piece of evidence that when you decide something and do it, it happens. Then keep the next one nearly as small, because a run of finished small things rebuilds the belief faster than one large attempt that stalls.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Do not despair of God's mercy (Quran 39:53). It is said to people who believe they have spoiled things beyond mending, which is the exact mood avoidance grows in.
Say, ‘[God says], My servants who have harmed yourselves by your own excess, do not despair of God’s mercy. God forgives all sins: He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful

What the research says
A randomised controlled trial tested whether a mobile and web app designed with students increased mental health help seeking among them, which is the same shape of problem: getting a stuck person to take one step. It looked at help seeking rather than at daily tasks, and trials of this kind tend to find small effects. It is still a reminder that shrinking the first step is a serious intervention rather than a consolation prize.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Doubt about whether you can change anything is answered by evidence, and it has to be evidence you made.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Before you offer anyone the upside of their ADHD, say the hard part out loud first. One patient's answer to being told it was a gift was to ask where he could return it.
Some people book their first assessment on the day they turn eighteen, because it is the first day they can consent without a parent. If you have been waiting like that, the waiting was not laziness.
The idea that attention problems are a moral failing is older than the diagnosis itself. An early medical name for this put it down to defective moral control, so if you grew up hearing that you simply were not trying, you were hearing an echo of that.
