A clock only counts if you can see it without doing anything. Behind you, in a pocket, behind a lock screen: that is not a clock, that is an errand.
Walk through the places where time actually disappears for you and put something visible in each one. The bathroom, the kitchen, the desk, the room where you get dressed. Cheap ones are fine. The test is whether you could learn the time by accident, without ever deciding to.
Qur’an and Sunnah
They show the times appointed for people (Quran 2:189). Visible markers of time get a plain endorsement there.
They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper

What the research says
Two randomised trials, with 383 and 221 participants, tested a self regulation exercise combining mental contrasting with implementation intentions for people who delayed going to bed. That is trial evidence for deciding in advance, in one narrow domain, and not a test of clocks on walls. Take it as support for arranging things ahead of the moment rather than as proof of this tactic.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Every small step between you and the clock cuts how often you look, until you stop looking at all.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
The more you have to look up before you can begin, the further the real time drifts from your guess. Every search is also a door left open, and some of them lead somewhere else entirely.
Fun things serve the present. Important things serve the future. Put like that, you can see why the advice to just do the important thing is asking rather a lot.
The further off something sits, the less it weighs on today's decision. That is not a flaw in your reasoning. It is how the weighing works for everybody.
