Self-restraint runs on a supply that stress uses up. In a week when everything is late and nothing has been slept on, you will react to things you would normally let go.

That is worth knowing because it changes what you work on. Instead of trying to be more patient at the moment of provocation, look at what is quietly draining you all day, because that is what decides how much brake you have left by six o'clock. Fewer commitments, an earlier night, one less thing running late. It feels indirect, and it works on everything at once.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Moses asked, 'Lord, lift up my heart' (Quran 20:25) before he asked for anything else. Being steadied comes first, and the rest of the task is approached from there.

What the research says

Effortful control, meaning the capacity to steer your own behaviour, emotion and attention, has been studied as a dimension running across internalising and externalising conditions including ADHD. Treating it as one shared capacity makes sense of why everything gets harder at once when you are stretched. It is a way of organising the evidence rather than a measurement of your own supply on a given Tuesday.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

You do not get to be your best regulated self on top of a week that has taken everything you had.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
