Nobody needs help starting the things they enjoy. The skill worth building is starting the dull ones, and it is a narrower skill than it looks.

This is why being able to play a game for four hours tells you nothing about whether starting is hard for you. Treat the boring task as its own category with its own tricks: a set time, a timer, someone sitting in the room, the same chair every week. You are not repairing your whole character, only the first few minutes of the things that offer you nothing.

Qur’an and Sunnah

We shall show you the easy way (Quran 87:8). Taking the easiest way into a task sits well with that, rather than being a lesser way of doing it.

What the research says

A meta-analysis of habit formation interventions found that repeating a behaviour in a stable context does increase habit strength, a route that does not depend on staying motivated. The work was on physical activity, so how far it carries over to paperwork is an open question, and habit strength is not the same thing as the job getting done.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Repeating something in the same setting lets it start running without a fresh decision each time.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
