Getting yourself going today usually means borrowing a feeling from later in the week. You are not summoning willpower so much as bringing Thursday's relief, or Thursday's panic, forward into Monday.

If that transfer is hard for you, the answer is not to try harder but to make the future more present: the date written where you will see it, a message to a friend saying what you will have done by then, the file left open on the desk. Anything that gives the later day a foothold in this one is doing the job your imagination is struggling with.

Qur’an and Sunnah

You humans, toiling laboriously towards your Lord, will meet Him (Quran 84:6). The meeting ahead is what gives today's ordinary effort its weight.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحࣰ ا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ

What the research says

Imaging meta-analyses found that holding the future in mind and valuing delayed rewards depend on overlapping brain systems, which frames this as a capacity that varies between people rather than a matter of effort. The evidence points to shared machinery, so it explains the difficulty better than it prescribes a fix.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Feeling the future is what makes a person move before they have to.
