Go down the list and find the two items that have been sitting there for months. One of them needs doing this week. The other needs deleting, honestly and out loud.

A list full of things that never move quietly drains everything else on it, because you meet all of them each time you look. Clearing in either direction gives you the list back. Deleting is not a failure. It is saying plainly that this was never going to happen, which was true already and was only costing you the guilt.

Qur’an and Sunnah

God's earth is wide (Quran 39:10). There is room to put something down and spend the effort where it will actually go.

Say, ‘[God says], believing servants, be mindful of your Lord! Those who do good in this world will have a good reward- God’s earth is wide––and those who persevere patiently will be given a full and unstinting reward.’

What the research says

A set of five experiments found that keeping up optimistic beliefs about your own abilities and future itself draws on self-regulatory resources. That lends some weight to the idea that a list of things you keep promising yourself is not free to carry. It was laboratory work about positivity rather than about to do lists, so the link here is by analogy.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Things you keep meaning to do take up room even on the days you never touch them.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
