The other way through fog is to walk into it. Start badly, on purpose, and let the shape of the thing appear while you are working on it.

With some jobs you genuinely cannot know what you are doing until you are inside them, and waiting for clarity first just keeps you outside. Give yourself half an hour of deliberately rough work: the wrong draft, the first attempt, the version nobody sees. What comes back is information you could not have got by thinking, and usually the task looks smaller afterwards.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Take action! (Quran 9:105). The instruction comes without a condition that you must first understand everything.

Say [Prophet], ‘Take action! God will see your actions- as will His Messenger and the believers- and then you will be returned to Him who knows what is seen and unseen, and He will tell you what you have been doing

What the research says

Meta-analysis of behavioural activation, which works by scheduling activity whatever your motivation is doing and letting mood follow, found it effective for depression across the trials pooled. It supports acting before you feel ready as a general principle. It was tested as a treatment for depression, not as a way of handling an unclear task at work.

BA comparable to full CBT protocols.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Doing a bit of it tells you things that no amount of planning would have told you.

When not to

If a mistake here would be costly or hard to undo, ask first and dive in second.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
