Areas › Your body › Rest and pacing
Rest is not the prize waiting at the end of the work. It is part of what makes the work possible, and it does not have to be earned first.
Self control runs down over a day the way a battery does, and the thing that fills it back up is properly stopping. What that looks like is yours to choose: lying down, a walk, sitting with a cup of something and no screen anywhere near you. What matters is that it is a real gap rather than work with a nicer view. If you wait until you deserve it, you will only ever rest once there is nothing left to run on.
Qur’an and Sunnah
It is He who made the night so that you can rest in it (Quran 10:67). Rest is written into the way the days were built, so stopping is not you failing the day.
It is He who made the night so that you can rest in it and the daylight so that you can see- there truly are signs in this for those who hear

What the research says
In a randomised trial, teachers with insomnia who kept turning work over in their heads used an unguided internet recovery programme and slept better afterwards, and the sleep gains followed from getting better at detaching from work. The active part was the detaching, not simply having hours that were free. One trial, one occupational group, so treat it as a decent hint rather than a settled rule.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Whatever you use to keep yourself going runs low, and it only comes back when you genuinely stop.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
There are two jobs here, not one. Free up the time, and then be able to sit in it without feeling like a fraud.
Say it, out loud if you can manage it: I am done for the day. A decision, rather than a slow guilty drift away from the desk.
When you are already behind, rest feels like the one thing you cannot afford. That feeling is usually what keeps you behind.
