By response rate, extended release stimulants are among the most effective medicines in psychiatry, and most people tolerate them well. That is worth hearing plainly, particularly from people who are not generally keen on medication.
What the long acting form buys you is coverage. A dose that has faded by four in the afternoon leaves the evening bare, and the evening is where home life mostly happens: the meal, the homework, the bedtime, the conversation you meant to have. If mornings go fine and evenings fall apart, that is a pattern to raise with the prescriber rather than a fact of life to be endured.

What the research says
A meta-analysis of double blind placebo controlled trials compared methylphenidate and amphetamine formulations in children and adolescents, since trials putting them head to head are scarce. Alongside it, a trial compared once daily extended release methylphenidate with dosing three times a day, in the laboratory and in ordinary settings, to see whether avoiding the school hours dose costs anything. Together they support the point that formulation and timing matter, in children and adolescents, since that is who was studied.

Dose, timing and whether a stimulant suits you at all are decisions for your prescriber, especially with heart trouble, high blood pressure or a history of misuse.

A child's reputation is made in the classroom, mostly out of adult earshot, and it follows them from one year to the next. Teachers who work on how the class treats the child, and not only on the child, can move it.
Being told ADHD is largely inherited can sound like being told nothing can be done. It does not follow, and the two questions are separate ones.
Before anything else, the people around the child need to understand what ADHD actually is. Everything else works better once that has happened.
