If a child is behind in reading, the gap rarely closes on its own with another year of the same. Asking for a proper assessment now is kinder than hoping that maturity will do the work.
National figures show reading proficiency barely shifting between primary school and the end of secondary, which tells you that catching up later is not quietly happening in the background. So the sensible question is not whether to make a fuss but who to ask and when. Ask early, ask someone who knows this specific area, and put the request in writing so there is a record of when you asked.
Qur’an and Sunnah
You can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know (Quran 16:43). Asking is instructed, so a parent putting questions to a school is doing something the text approves of rather than causing trouble.
[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know

What the research says
Reviews following dyslexia across the lifespan find that it persists into adulthood and usually travels with difficulties in planning and with emotional strain, not only with reading accuracy. That is a narrative review, so it describes the pattern rather than proving what any particular intervention would change. What it does undercut is the comforting idea that a child will simply grow out of it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The skills underneath reading do not appear by themselves, so time on its own changes very little.
When not to
If speech and language are also hard, ask for a speech and language assessment alongside the reading one, since the two are often tangled together.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
You do not need to become a reading specialist to be useful in a school meeting. A few hours with the current material on how reading is learned will put you ahead of most of the room, and you can carry it in kindly rather than as a challenge.
For a very able student, an average score can be the finding rather than proof there is nothing wrong. If everything else sits far above and the sound skills sit in the middle, the distance between them is the thing to report.
A child who talks well, listens well and seems bright will have their reading failure read as laziness. The strengths are exactly what makes the blame stick.
