Instead of one warning, give several: half an hour, fifteen minutes, five, one. The child then has time to arrive at the ending rather than having it dropped on them.

A single warning asks a child to track the gap on their own, which is the thing they cannot do. A ladder of prompts turns a stretch of time into a few events they can notice. It also lowers the temperature at transitions, because most of the trouble at the end of something is not stubbornness, it is being wrenched out of it without warning.

Qur’an and Sunnah

We have determined phases for the moon (Quran 36:39). Time given in visible stages is easier to follow than time left as one long stretch.

وَٱلۡقَمَرَ قَدَّرۡنَٰهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَٱلۡعُرۡجُونِ ٱلۡقَدِيمِ

We have determined phases for the moon until finally it becomes like an old date-stalk

What the research says

An experimental study tied the felt passage of time to interoception, the sense of your own bodily signals, suggesting duration is partly built from inside. If some of that construction is unreliable, a spoken marker from outside supplies what the inside is not supplying. It is one laboratory study about mechanism and not a study of countdowns with children.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Time passing is invisible, but somebody saying five minutes is not, so the countdown makes the invisible thing into something they can hear.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
