Look in often, say the good bits out loud, and stop for a few minutes about every hour. Three small things that carry more than any talk about concentrating harder.

Checking in supplies the noticing a child cannot yet do for themselves, and it lands better as a passing question than as an inspection. The praise is not decoration either. In a difficult stretch nearly everything an adult says to this child is a correction, and that ratio needs turning back the other way on purpose. Take the break before the wheels come off rather than after.

Qur’an and Sunnah

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak (Quran 4:28). Needing rest is stated plainly, with no blame attached to it.

يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمۡۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ ضَعِيفࣰ ا

What the research says

A meta-analysis of mind wandering found that it rises as a task becomes more demanding and differs reliably between people, which is an argument for stopping before an hour has worn all the way through. Alongside that, the foundational review of psychosocial treatment for ADHD established behavioural parent training as a well-established approach, and the monitoring and praise parents learn in it are the substance of that work. Neither one fixes the right length of a break, so the hour is a rule of thumb.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Attention wears down as the hour goes on and a child wears down under correction, so both need topping up deliberately.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
