When all you can say is that something happened and you went off, take it apart in five pieces: what set it off, how you read it, what your body did, what you made it mean, and what you wanted to do next.

Written out on paper it usually stops being a blur. You often find the trigger was small and the meaning was enormous, or that your body was already braced before anybody said anything. That is not an exercise in blame, it is just a way of getting a shapeless event into a form you can look at, and it works as well the next day as it does in the moment.

What the research says

A meta-analysis of 96 studies of eating difficulties found that not knowing what you feel, and not being able to tell one feeling from another, carried large associations with the problem, alongside difficulties with acceptance and reappraisal. So a lack of clarity is not a minor detail, it is part of the picture. Those studies measured things travelling together rather than showing what causes what.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A thing with parts can be examined, and a formless thing can only be endured.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
