Areas › Low mood and hard feelings › Emotions as signals
You do not have to reflect back everything a person just told you. Pick up the part that carries the weight and say that much.
A long, careful summary can flatten what someone has just risked saying. If the heart of it is that he feels defeated and frightened of never being enough for her, say that and leave the details where they are. Short and accurate holds the feeling in place. Thorough and complete tends to cool it, and if the point is for his wife to hear him, cool is not what you are after.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'We are well aware that your heart is weighed down by what they say' (Quran 15:97). One sentence names the weight, and nothing is piled on top of it.
وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

What the research says
A conceptual review of sleep and emotion defines emotions as biologically based responses that arise when something important is at stake, which gives you a workable test for what to keep: say the thing that is at stake. The review itself was about sleep, so this is borrowing a definition rather than leaning on a finding about listening. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not as evidence that shorter reflections work better.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The part that stings is the part the other person needs to hear, and everything packed around it waters it down.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Every feeling comes with something it wants you to do. Catching the move before you make it is most of the skill.
There is a kind of anger that floods a room and a kind that arrives with a request inside it. The second one gets answered.
You cannot ask for something you cannot feel the want of. Before working out how to say it, spend a minute finding what you actually need.
