When you go blank or shut down under pressure, try meeting it with 'of course I did'. That response was learned somewhere it was needed, and it is still running long after the danger passed.
Put a place on it if you can. Whose house were you in when going quiet was the safest thing available? Naming where it came from does two things at once. It stops the behaviour looking like a character flaw, and it turns it into something you can slowly update. You are not excusing the effect it has on people now. You are refusing to call yourself broken for having learned it.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak' (Quran 4:28). Weakness is spoken of as part of how people are made, not as your private failing.
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمۡۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ ضَعِيفࣰ ا

What the research says
An early systematic review of compassion focused therapy found it particularly promising for people whose difficulties are driven by high shame and self criticism, which is this pattern exactly. The reviewers were clear that the evidence base was still small at that point, so read it as a hopeful direction rather than a settled one.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A habit that once protected you is far easier to change than a defect you believe you are.
When not to
If tracing where it started opens up more than you can hold, do this alongside a therapist rather than on your own.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Shame speaks in one flat sentence: I am bad. Notice that it never offers evidence, it just announces a verdict.
You did not choose which things hurt you. Where you are tender was set long before you had any say in it, and the only live question is what you do with it now.
If you can see shame arriving in someone, say so gently and make it welcome. Something like: it looks like there is some shame here, and it is alright that it came.
