Be the first to lower your guard today, even a little, and say something true and soft.

Someone has to move first. Let it be you, with one honest, undefended sentence.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Speak gently, God told Musa, even to Pharaoh (Qur'an 20:44). Going first with gentleness is strength, not weakness.

فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰ ا لَّيِّنࣰ ا لَّعَلَّهُۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ يَخۡشَىٰ

Speak to him gently so that he may take heed, or show respect.’

What the research says

Standoffs end when someone goes first. Offering one soft, honest thing, before it feels safe, is the brave move that lets your partner meet you.

Johnson, S.M. (2019). Attachment Theory in Practice: Emotionally Focused Therapy with Individuals, Couples, and Families. Guilford

The originator's account of EFT as attachment-based practice.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

One partner risking vulnerability invites the other to do the same.

Where this sits: EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), attachment-based couple intervention.
