On a stuck, recurring fight, stop trying to persuade. First explore the dream or value behind each position.

Gridlock rarely yields to argument. Set persuasion aside and get curious about what the issue means to each of you.

Qur’an and Sunnah

By an act of mercy you were gentle; had you been harsh they would have dispersed (Quran 3:159). Gentleness, not force, is what keeps a stuck conversation from breaking.

By an act of mercy from God, you [Prophet] were gentle in your dealings with them- had you been harsh, or hard-hearted, they would have dispersed and left you- so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them. Consult with them about matters, then, when you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in God: God loves those who put their trust in Him

What the research says

Perpetual problems do not budge under pressure; shifting from persuading to understanding the dream behind each position is what unlocks them, turning foes back into friends.

Gottman, J.; Coan, J.; Carrere, S.; Swanson, C. (1998). Predicting Marital Happiness and Stability from Newlywed Interactions. Journal of Marriage and the Family doi

Newlywed interaction patterns; accepting influence; soft start-up.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Replacing persuasion with curiosity about the meaning behind a position is what moves a couple from gridlock to dialogue.

Where this sits: Gottman method, Manage Conflict; Dreams Within Conflict (gridlocked, perpetual problems).

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
