When someone is frightened, your words may not reach them however sensible they are. Drop your voice, slow right down, and let the tone do the work.

In high alarm, hearing tips towards low rumbling sounds and away from the range the human voice sits in, so reassurance can genuinely fail to land. Say less. Keep your face soft, get down to their eye level, leave gaps. Once they have come down, the conversation you were trying to have becomes possible.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'remember your Lord inwardly, in all humility and awe, without raising your voice' (Quran 7:205). A lowered voice is named as the fitting one for a moment of awe, and it happens to be the one a frightened person can receive.

[Prophet], remember your Lord inwardly, in all humility and awe, without raising your voice, in the mornings and in the evenings- do not be one of the heedless

What the research says

There is direct evidence that breath changes autonomic state: an experimental crossover study found deep slow breathing and vagal stimulation both raised vagal tone, improved gut motility and reduced pain sensitivity. That study was about the person doing the breathing, not about the effect of someone else's voice. Slowing your own breathing before you speak is the part with evidence behind it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

In alarm the ear itself tunes away from human speech, so how you sound matters more than what you say.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
