Whatever you did in the worst moment, your body chose it faster than thought. You did not decide it and then get it wrong.
The selection happens deep in the brain, in a fraction of a second, before the part of you that weighs options gets a look in. People spend years asking why they did not shout, run or hit back. The honest answer is usually that there was no moment in which any of that was a choice.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'by the soul and how He formed it' (Quran 91:7). How you are made is treated as worth attending to, and part of how you are made acted for you before you could.
Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
What the research says
A meta-analysis of a hundred and thirteen studies on acute stress and memory found stress helps or harms recall depending on its timing and the stage of memory involved. That fits a familiar experience: the crisis is vivid in places and blank in others. It speaks to memory rather than to the speed of the response itself, so treat it as a related finding rather than proof.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
