Five minutesAny ordinary dayBody basedYour body

Once a day, run through five things in order: how your mind is, what your body feels, how the breathing is going, what the emotional weather is, and how much energy you have. Curious, not marking yourself.

The order matters more than the answers do. Without a set path, checking in with yourself slides easily into chewing over the same worry, and you come out of it worse than you went in. Five named places to look keeps things moving. Some days three of them will come back blank, and that is an answer too.

What the research says

A meta-analysis of mediation studies asked how mindfulness based programmes actually help, and found the benefit runs partly through increased mindfulness and self compassion, and partly through less rumination and worry. The rumination part is the relevant one here: the useful version of self checking is the one that does not turn into brooding. Mediation studies map the route rather than the size of the effect.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Naming where you are, in a fixed order, keeps you from circling the same thought.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
