A gut feeling is a real signal rather than a turn of phrase. The chemicals that carry emotion in your brain are also at work in your heart and your gut.

This matters most if you grew up being told your read on a situation was wrong. Noticing the sensation, naming it, then checking it against what you know is a way back towards trusting yourself. It does not mean every gut feeling is correct. It means it is information worth having rather than noise to override.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'by the soul and how He formed it' (Quran 91:7). The way you are made is worth attending to rather than talking yourself out of.

What the research says

A systematic review of interoception, vagal tone and emotional regulation found both bodily awareness and vagal tone relate to how well people regulate emotion, while noting the two have usually been studied separately. So noticing your body and being steadier do travel together. Whether your gut reads a situation accurately is a different question, and this review does not answer it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Your gut sends the brain a running report, so what you feel there is part of how you know things.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
