When the danger still feels like it is happening, that is not a mistake in your thinking. It is a sequence in your body that never got to finish.
This is why arguing with yourself does so little. You can know the date, know where you are, know it is long over, and still have a system reporting live threat. What shifts it is usually doing something that completes the response, or building enough felt safety for the system to close the file itself.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'there is no fear, nor shall they grieve' (Quran 10:62). The settled state is named as something given rather than something you must produce on command.
أَلَآ إِنَّ أَوۡلِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ
But for those who are on God’s side there is no fear, nor shall they grieve

What the research says
A meta-analysis of early life adversity found a blunted rather than heightened cortisol response to social stress, suggesting the stress system can be recalibrated for the long term. Systems really do stay changed after the events end. It concerns hormone responses in group studies rather than the experience of ongoing threat, so treat it as adjacent evidence rather than a direct explanation.

Why it works
Your body is reporting an unfinished sequence, and it will not be talked out of it.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
If your usual trouble is going blank, feeling unreal or watching yourself from a distance, this is the kind of work that tends to reach that.
Deep rest needs a dose like anything else. If a long daily relaxation is leaving you flatter each week rather than steadier, make it shorter.
If your response to being hurt was to go blank rather than fight or run, look at how old you were and how big they were. Blank may have been the only thing left.
