Trauma sleeplessness usually has two layers: night itself carries meaning, and the body's clock has moved. Both need attention.
If bad things happened at night, lying in the dark listening to every sound is not a bad habit, it is vigilance doing its job. Sleep advice alone will not touch that. Equally, working on the meaning will not fix a rhythm that has genuinely shifted. Expect to work on both, and expect it to be slow.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'God takes the souls of the dead and the souls of the living while they sleep' (Quran 39:42). Sleep is described as a nightly handing over, which is precisely what feels dangerous when your nights were unsafe.
God takes the souls of the dead and the souls of the living while they sleep- He keeps hold of those whose death He has ordained and sends the others back until their appointed time- there truly are signs in this for those who reflect

What the research says
A randomised controlled trial with a hundred and twenty six participants found physical activity, mindfulness and heart rate variability biofeedback all reduced stress, anxiety, depression and sleep problems to a comparable degree, with no clear winner. Several routes reach sleep and none of them is the single answer. The trial was not in a trauma population, so read it as general encouragement rather than a plan.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
One layer is about what night means to you and the other is about timing, and each needs its own kind of help.
When not to
If nights are frightening or nightmares are frequent, take this to a therapist rather than solving it alone.

Near this one
Feeling worse as things get safer is confusing, and it is common. When the guard finally comes down, whatever it was holding down gets felt.
Before picking a calming technique, work out which way you are off. Revved up and shut down need opposite things.
The tools that reach what words cannot are physical: feet on the floor, a long breath out, pushing hard against a wall, deliberately walking away from something.
