There is a route the calming nerve takes through you: eyes, then jaw and mouth, then throat and neck, then shoulders and chest, then belly. You can visit each stop in turn and simply notice what is there.

Give every area a moment before you move on. Soften around the eyes, let the jaw hang, sigh the throat loose, feel the chest lift, then rest a hand low on the belly. Nothing has to happen at any stop. Finishing at the soft middle of you rather than picking one spot at random tends to leave the whole thing more settled.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, wash your feet up to the ankles' (Quran 5:6), and the same verse says God wishes to cleanse you rather than burden you. Moving through the body part by part is a familiar shape in Islam, and it is meant as care.

You who believe, when you are about to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, wash your feet up to the ankles and, if required, wash your whole body. If any of you is sick or on a journey, or has just relieved himself, or had intimate contact with a woman, and can find no water, then take some clean sand and wipe your face and hands with it. God does not wish to place any burden on you: He only wishes to cleanse you and perfect His blessing on you, so that you may be thankful

What the research says

A systematic review of kangaroo mother care found that the same name covers quite different things across settings: how long the contact lasts, how often feeding happens, when a family goes home. That lesson carries over to body practices generally, which get named loosely and described vaguely. Knowing exactly what you are doing and in what order is the useful part. The review itself says nothing about the vagus nerve.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

The nerve that quietens you passes through all those places, so working each in turn gives it more than one way in.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
