The tools that slow things down mostly use your head: naming what is happening, standing back a little, putting the distress at arm's length for now.
Explaining to yourself what your body is doing. Watching a thought rather than arguing with it. Asking whether the worst reading is the only reading. Imagining the difficult thing further away, or in a box with a lid on, for the afternoon. Picturing a place where you are at ease. None of that is avoidance when it is chosen deliberately and for a while. It is how you stay in the room with something instead of being carried off by it.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'there truly are signs in this for those who reflect' (Quran 39:42). Reflection is given real work to do, which is what these tools ask of you.
God takes the souls of the dead and the souls of the living while they sleep- He keeps hold of those whose death He has ordained and sends the others back until their appointed time- there truly are signs in this for those who reflect

What the research says
A meta analysis of meditation, yoga and mindfulness in students in higher education found reductions in depression, anxiety and stress, with moderate effects that shrank when measured against active control conditions. Deliberate mental practices help, and by less than the enthusiastic version claims. Those interventions overlap with these tools without being identical to them.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Putting words and a bit of distance around a feeling gives the thinking part of you a job, and that steadies the rest.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Deep rest needs a dose like anything else. If a long daily relaxation is leaving you flatter each week rather than steadier, make it shorter.
Unfinished defence tends to park somewhere specific: a jaw that will not unclench, arms that never got to push, legs that never ran.
You can tell you are back when there is choice in it again: you can pick which thought to keep hold of, and how to answer what you feel.
