You are allowed to put something down. Put it down with a time to pick it up again: Thursday morning, with my therapist, not tonight.
Without the appointment, setting it aside quietly turns into never touching it, and the thing keeps all its power by never being looked at. With the appointment, the relief is real and the work is still coming. Say the time out loud or write it down, because a vague later is not a time.
Qur’an and Sunnah
celebrate the praise of your Lord, before the rising and setting of the sun (Quran 20:130). Patience is given fixed times to return to, and a set time is what turns a pause into a plan.
so [Prophet] be patient with what they say- celebrate the praise of your Lord, before the rising and setting of the sun, celebrate His praise during the night, and at the beginning and end of the day, so that you may find contentment

What the research says
In a laboratory experiment, people who were allowed to make a protective response while facing a feared cue went on believing the cue was dangerous, while those who could not kept learning that it was safe. Escape with no return prevents the learning. This was fear conditioning in a laboratory rather than trauma work, so read it as a principle and not a prescription.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Coming back is what makes stepping away containment rather than avoidance.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Tell yourself the true thing: this feeling is real, and it is temporary. No state lasts. Ride it out.
Before going towards a hard feeling, decide what will hold you while you are inside it: a way of breathing, a way of standing, a sentence, a person you can picture or ring.
Stop fighting what already is. Accepting a hard reality, without approving of it, ends the extra layer of pain.
