Areas › Your body › Grounding and settling
Take the spine through all six of its movements: forward, back, bending to each side, turning to each side. Standing or sitting, it takes under five minutes.
Doing the whole set matters more than doing any one of them beautifully. Left to ourselves we skip the direction that feels stiff or guarded, and that is usually the one holding the most. Go slowly enough to notice which you wanted to leave out, then give that one a little more time without forcing anything.
Qur’an and Sunnah
We spread out the earth (Quran 51:48). The image is of something opened out and smoothed rather than left bunched up, which is a fair picture of what these movements are for.

What the research says
A network meta-analysis of physical relaxation for occupational stress found yoga and stretching among the approaches that helped, alongside massage and progressive muscle relaxation, with none clearly better than the rest. It was carried out with healthcare workers, so read it as support for gentle movement generally rather than for this sequence. No trial has tested these six directions as a set.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Covering every direction stops you quietly avoiding the one your body is bracing in.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Sound that repeats slowly, waves, rain, steady recitation, brings you down. Fast, loud, unpredictable music, or whistling, brings you up.
Trace a square in the air with your finger while you breathe: in for four along the first side, hold for four, out for four, hold for four.
On a video call, two things still work well: touching your own face gently, and rocking. Both are yours to do, and both are visible enough to be done together.
