Breath reaches the settling machinery faster than reasoning does, because it works on a part of the brainstem that does not wait for your opinion.
That is why arguing yourself out of a panic rarely works while six slow breaths often do something. It also explains why breath practice can feel disappointingly mechanical: it is not there to persuade you, only to change the conditions. Bring the words in afterwards, once the conditions have shifted, rather than leading with them.
Qur’an and Sunnah
God is 'closer to him than his jugular vein' (Quran 50:16). Nearness is placed inside the body, which is where this sort of help arrives.
We created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––

What the research says
A randomised controlled trial found that a single session of slow breathing biofeedback reduced performance anxiety and altered heart rate variability in musicians. One brief exposure was enough to produce a measurable effect, which fits the idea that this route is a quick one. It was a single small trial in a specific setting, so treat the speed as promising rather than established.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The brainstem is watching the chemistry of your blood, and breathing changes that directly.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Some routes ask you to do something: breathing, moving, stretching. Others ask you to receive: music, warm water, somebody else's voice. Keep one of each, because which one you can manage depends on the day.
The unsettled pattern is not simply a smaller rhythm. It is a jagged one, swinging up and down without much order to it.
Neurofeedback has its strongest support in attention difficulties, decent support in depression and anxiety, and for trauma it is promising rather than proven.
