Areas › Your body › Posture and how you carry yourself
Picture a cat getting up from a nap. One side lengthens and reaches while the other side curls in, then they swap over. Do that. Add breath and sound if you want them.
After a minute of copying the animal, drop the instructions and let your body carry on however it likes. That is the reason for starting here: yawning and stretching are not skills anybody taught you, so there is no correct version to fail at. People who lock up in structured movement will often move quite freely in this.
Qur’an and Sunnah
They fell to their knees and wept (Quran 19:58). The Qur'an records bodies responding before any decision was taken, and treats that as fitting rather than as a loss of control.
These were the prophets God blessed- from the seed of Adam, of those We carried in the Ark with Noah, from the seed of Abraham and Israel- and those We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Lord of Mercy were recited to them, they fell to their knees and wept

What the research says
A review of what is known about yoga and the brain, looking at motor performance and body awareness, is honest that the work so far is preliminary. There is enough there to say attention to the moving body is trainable and shows up in the brain, and not enough to make confident claims about any one movement. Treat the whole body stretch as something worth trying rather than something demonstrated.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
This kind of stretch is something bodies already know how to do, so nothing has to be performed properly.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Once a shape feels safe, it becomes somewhere to explore from. The question stops being am I doing this right and turns into how does my body want to move now.
What frightens a body is usually not how hard a thing is, it is having no way out. So put movement as an offer. If it feels alright, you might try lifting your arms.
Grounding and relaxing are two different prescriptions. A squat with your back against a wall puts you back into your legs. Deep guided rest takes you downwards. Reach for whichever one is missing.
