Work one side of your face or body first, then stop and compare. The difference between the treated side and the untreated one is often surprisingly clear.

This is a useful trick if you tend to finish a practice thinking nothing happened. Rather than asking whether you feel better, which is a vague question, you are asking a very specific one: does this cheek feel different from that cheek. Then do the second side to even yourself up. It gives you evidence you did not have to talk yourself into.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'placed the shirt on to Jacob's face, his eyesight returned' (Quran 12:96). The change in the story is one anybody in the room could see, and noticing a plain difference is allowed to be enough.

Then, when the bearer of good news came and placed the shirt on to Jacob’s face, his eyesight returned and he said, ‘Did I not tell you that I have knowledge from God that you do not have?’

What the research says

A Cochrane review of skin to skin care during medical procedures in newborns found reduced pain responses, visible in both behavioural and physiological measures. Effects from simple contact do show up in observations rather than only in what somebody says about themselves. Those were infants during procedures, which is a long way from comparing one side of your own face with the other.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A side by side comparison is easier for the body to answer than a question about your mood.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
