Now, and later

Anything that pays immediately and charges later is heavily learned. That is the reinforcement schedule that builds habits, and it is the one your phone was designed around.

Starting the essay is the opposite arrangement. It costs now and pays much later, and the payment is vague. Even the person who wants the degree badly is being asked to accept a real, immediate, specific discomfort in exchange for a distant and blurry benefit.

Willpower framing loses this argument every time, because it is not an argument about how much you want the degree. It is an argument about now.
