Two doors, and both lead back in

At the end of the loop there are only two doors and you have been through both of them many times.

The first is compliance. You give in, the temperature drops, and everybody is warm again for a fortnight. What it also does is prove that the demand works, which means the next one arrives sooner and larger.

The second is rupture. You have had enough, you say something final, you stop answering. Then the guilt arrives, and religious guilt on top of ordinary guilt, and after some weeks or some months you come back. Almost everybody comes back. And you come back with less standing than you had, because now there is a thing you did that can be brought up.

Two doors, one room. This is why the answer is not a bigger version of either of them.
