The case the commentaries connect to those verses

There is a narration behind 31:15 and 29:8 that is worth knowing about, and we are going to describe it rather than quote it, for a reason given at the end.

A Companion became Muslim. His mother swore she would not speak to him, nor eat, nor drink, until he left his religion. She held to it for days, until she collapsed. He did not comply. And the verses that came were not a rebuke to him. They confirmed that he was not to obey, and in the same breath commanded him to keep good company with her.

That is a parent using her own body as pressure, which is about as far as emotional leverage can go, and the answer given was neither obedience nor rupture.

Why we are not quoting it as evidence: the collection reference for this narration has a sub letter on it, and the number without the sub letter is a completely different report about something else. We are not putting a reference on this page that we have not had confirmed. Take it as background, not as a proof.
